How to Take Turns Hosting a Valheim World
Can you take turns hosting the same Valheim world? Yes - if every host has the latest copy. How to rotate hosts without losing a night's progress.
A Valheim world doesn’t have to belong to one person. Plenty of groups would rather take turns: whoever is free tonight hosts, and the world carries on from where it was left. It works well - as long as every host starts from the latest copy.
Can You Take Turns Hosting a Valheim World?
Yes. Valheim has no idea who “owns” a world. It is a folder in worlds_local, and whoever has that folder can start it. Characters are separate - they stay on each player’s PC in characters_local - so nobody’s Viking changes when the host does.
The only real rule: one host per session, and the next host must have the copy the last session saved to.
What Breaks a Valheim Host Rotation?
Almost every failed rotation is the same mistake: someone hosts from an old copy.
Picture it. Ana hosts on Friday, and the group finally beats the Elder. On Saturday Ben hosts, but Ben’s copy is from Wednesday, because Ana never sent Friday’s world. Saturday’s session saves on top of Wednesday’s world. The Elder is alive again, Friday’s longhouse is gone, and now there are two versions of the world that can’t be merged.
Two other things trip groups up:
- Copying files instead of the folder. Since Valheim 1.0 a world is a folder of chunk files with a generation number. Copy only some of them and the world won’t load properly.
- Cloud worlds. A world with a cloud icon lives in the host’s Steam account, not in
worlds_local. Move it to local (Manage saves → Worlds → Move to local) before it can be passed around.
How Do You Rotate Hosts Manually?
- Pick tonight’s host before anyone starts the world.
- The last host sends the world folder from
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim\worlds_local- the whole folder, zipped. - Tonight’s host replaces their copy with it, then starts the world.
- After the session, tonight’s host sends the world to everyone so the next host is ready.
Step 4 is the one that gets skipped, usually at 1 a.m. by someone who just wants to go to bed.
How SaveSync Rotates Hosts Automatically
SaveSync takes steps 2 to 4 off your hands. Share the world once, and the latest copy reaches every player after each session. Whoever hosts next is already on the newest version.
It also keeps a history of every upload - who uploaded which save and when - so if somebody does host from a stale copy, you can roll the world back to the right one instead of losing it.
Setup is a couple of minutes and covered in the Valheim save sharing guide.
Should Your Group Rotate or Run a Server?
Rotation suits groups that play together at set times. If people want to drop in alone at random hours, a dedicated server that stays online fits better.
ServerSync, our second app, runs a Valheim dedicated server on your own PC with no port forwarding, and can convert the world you are already rotating. It is free and in beta - ask for a key in ServerSync’s Discord. The trade-offs are laid out in Valheim co-op without a dedicated server.
Share the Load, Not the Headache
Taking turns spreads the hosting work across the group and means the world is never stuck behind one person’s schedule. Keep every copy current and it stays that way.
