How to Continue Big Walk When Your Host Is Offline
Big Walk requires the original host to resume your saved journey. Here's how to continue where you left off when the host is offline - so the group isn't stuck waiting.

Here is the situation almost every Big Walk group runs into within a week: you had a great session, made real progress across the Australian countryside, and agreed to pick it up tomorrow. Tomorrow arrives, half the group is online and ready - and the one person who hosted last time isn’t. So the walk waits.
It isn’t a bug. It’s how Big Walk is built.
Why Big Walk Needs the Original Host
Big Walk saves your group’s progress automatically on the host’s machine, and ownership of that journey stays with the host. To continue where you left off, that same original host has to start the session again. Guests disconnect when the host ends a session, and there is no built-in way to resume a saved walk without the person who was hosting it - crossplay doesn’t change that either.
So when someone asks “can we just keep going without them?” the honest answer, out of the box, is no. Whoever holds the save holds the journey.
The Real Fix: Put the Save on More Than One Machine
The reason the group is stuck isn’t the host - it’s that the save only exists in one place. If the saved journey lived on every PC player’s machine, any of them could host it and the walk would continue.
That is exactly what SaveSync does. It keeps your Big Walk save synchronized across every player in the group. Whoever hosted last syncs their progress automatically when the session ends; whoever is free next pulls the current save and hosts. The original host being offline stops mattering, because they are no longer the only one holding the journey.
How to Set It Up
- Everyone who might host installs SaveSync on PC.
- Create a sync group and invite the walking party.
- Select Big Walk in SaveSync, pick your save, and you’re done.
- Share it with your friends so the whole group is on the same save.
- Play normally. SaveSync distributes the latest save when each session wraps.
- Anyone loads the current save and hosts the next leg - no waiting on one specific person.
A quick note for cross-platform groups: SaveSync works with the PC (Steam) save, so keep at least one PC player who can host. Console saves (PS5, Switch 2) stay locked to their platform and can’t be shared.
Don’t Lose Progress in the Handoff
The one thing that breaks a group’s journey faster than an absent host is a stale save - someone loading an older copy and quietly rewinding everyone’s progress. SaveSync avoids that by always syncing the newest save after each session and keeping history, so if a walk goes sideways you can roll back to a known-good point instead of re-solving puzzles you already cleared.
Keep Walking
Big Walk is meant to be played at the group’s pace, not one person’s. Get the save onto every machine, and “the host is offline” stops being the end of the night.
For the full setup, see the Big Walk save sharing guide. To share hosting evenly instead of always relying on the same person, read the Big Walk host rotation guide. SaveSync works the same way across every supported co-op game - one purchase covers them all.
